| I seriously need to do some traveling, on my own. I keep thinking about all of the amazing places in the world and I have this desire to really just get out there and see it all for myself. I feel like that's so typical of people my age, but I really think I can do it! If I save up from a few DJ jobs (which I've finally started to do), I could take a pretty respectable trip.
I don't know, I just thought I'd say that :-D. Hope you're all doing well! Last night I helped throw an event at Central Park's Wollman Rink with over 1950 people in attendance. Yay! | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

Also, I played 2 gigs with Jeff and the Benjamins in addition to various acoustic gigs throughout the year. Also, all the Vocs gigs. | So I thought I'd make an Eljay post about this so that if people ask me what happened, I can just tell em to go here.
Last night were jazz band state finals. 9 bands are selected based on how well they play at a few preliminary competitions, there's no seeding so its based pretty much purely on talent. This year, we were lucky to have SPF Jazz (our school's "B" band, aka 2nd jazz band, 2nd to the moonglowers) make the state finals for the fourth year in a row. This in itself is a huge achievment, so we were all excited and getting geared up for a crazy night.
Before last night, we were all joking around about how crazy it would be if SPF Jazz beat us in the state finals. It was a totally ridiculous thought though, we never ever though that it would happen, it was insane! So anyway, we both put on kickass performances last night and we get to the awards ceremony.
There was a really good band there called Shawnee and they won 2 sectional awards, best saxes and best trumpets. We had a feeling they may have had us beat for the state title at this point. My section won best trombones! Which was pretty awesome. Than, SPF JAZZ won best rhythym at state finals FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. This was starting to get a little weird, yet cool!
Than they get to the best soloist awards, of which there were 5. spf jazz won 2 of them!
So than they get to the big part, the actual rankings. The bands that aren't in the top 3 get participation awards. So they go through all the bands alphabetically, and the only 3 bands left are...spf jazz, spf moonglowers, and shawnee!
Everyone right now is thinking that moonglowers either got 2nd or 1st, but there's still the crazy thought in everyone's mind that somehow, someway, spf jazz has won the state title.
So they announce the third place band. The guy seems to hang on the S forever as he goes...
SSSSSHAWNEE!
Shawnee was so offended that they walked out. Everyone in SPF could barely contain themselves, as we knew we had not only at least one of the best jazz bands in the state, but THE TWO BEST JAZZ BANDS IN THE FUCKING STATE!
So the guy says in 2nd place, and make sure that the second place band gets the recognition that they deserve... (once again he hangs on to the S)
SSSSSSSSSScotch Plains Fanwood...
MOONGLOWERS.
Thats right. The moonglowers got second place! In first place...
SPF Jazz!
We had been beaten by our 2nd jazz band for the state title! Everyone immidiatly begins flipping the fuck out. It was just crazy, the concept, the idea! I lost my mind for a good 4 hours.
I still have kind of mixed feelings about it.
On the bus, we learned that we lost by a technicality. We lost .5 points for going over our set time by 17 seconds (20 min. time limit), and so SPF beat us by .3 points. BUT, OUR SCHOOL STILL HAD A .8 LEAD OVER SHAWNEE!
In the end, I think that my reaction is just to be SO proud of our music department. Our town is so good at music, that our B BAND beat our A BAND and every band in the state!
I love this district so much and I'm really gonna miss it. This was a great way to go out I think....its just really crazy. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
| So, for all you Livejournal readers, since Meghan yelled at me tonight and proceeded to steal my trombone in anger.....
I got into Northeastern!
With the Dean's scholarship! for academic achievement....even though lockard gave me a C+ last year. for the year. interesting.
There is your update also, for future's sake, i was listening to the song "Something to Talk About" by Badly Drawn Boy when I found out I got into Northeastern. It was also around 6:00 AM because I was getting ready for Moonglowers/ready to leave. I walked into my mom and dad's room and flipped on the lights to wake them up. and when my dad find out about the scholarship, he said, THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION! he's always been a business man. and my mom flipped out and told me i had to call like MY ENTIRE FAMILY sorry that was for me to read in the future. i'm done. actually i guess i'll go on
lizzie i feel like i'm starting to steal your style of writing in these last few lines
tonight the chorus concert was REALLY good. I know that I'm in Men's and concert choir, and part of the music program, so I can't really say I'm not biased. But if one could see what Mr. B has done to the chorus program in the past few years....its ridiculous. The concert choir is singing three times better than select choir did my freshman year, if you ask me. No offense to the select choir my freshman year. Show choir actually did a great job too, I was really proud that they put on something beaautiful this year. Honestly, they usually have a hard time...this year, that changed for sure. And men's choir was strong too!
Its weird i've never actually been excited about choir. So far though this has been a great year for music and the department and i'm glad its happening my senior year. I'm so proud to be a part of it alll....it makes me really sad have to leave it. This is going to sound really, really, really annoying/weird/strange, but I literally can think about the music department and come close to tears with the pride i have for it. Every time I see a music booster car magnet, I immediatly am reminded that I'm a part of something huge in this town, that is really well accomplished. It makes me feel like I made a mark.
I'm hoping we can keep the same record for moonglowers and the show that we did this year *knocks on wood* in choir and marching band.
GO SPF MUSIC! woo!
P.S. the band scene is also really strong! There's so much talent....at every battle there used to be bands that, honest to god, sucked SO horrible, they couldn't even play in time together, vocalist sucked, guitarists missed every note. This year, every band that plays stays together, for the most part, maybe doesn't have a decent vocalist....
my point is the quality of music in this town has just gone up. i think. i hope. i hope its not just that I'm a bigger part of it and think so just because i'm inside of it all. i'm really not trying to be cocky.
sorry that turned into a rant. love ya'll for reading!

| Sooo
Thanksiving was pretty good, i stood outside of best buy and freezed my ass off for 6 hours to not get a laptop from 1030 to 410 in the morning afterwards. THAT WAS CRAZY
so i only post when i'm sad/mad, usually
So college apps are going pretty well
I'm almost done with USC and I have to make this Music Industry portfolio. It has the posters i've made for band nights and battle of the bands's and some recordings like moonglowers and lampshades.
So I burned the cd and put a label on it with my portfolio in it. and i brought it into sam's room, really just meaning for her to put it into her computer and see if it worked, and not looking for much critiscm.
her and her friend sasha literally ripped it apart...and you know, they say "not saying that its bad, but..." but this went on for a good 5-10 minutes.
one of the comments was about my poster for Ska Night at the galaxy. sasha pointed to this one part that didn't have text and was just like "yeah, that blank space isn't good"
blank space? the rset of the poster was covered in text! am i supposed to put text everywhere?
and than they said that the blue in the background of the portfolio was distracting it is a light blue, #00FFFF in hex codes....its really barely noticeable.
also, sam's friend said that my name should really jump out at them, and that it wasn't noticeable enough, it should be the biggest thing on the page.
the first line on the page, in the biggest font available, is Zach Feldman's Music Industry Portfolio
one other thing...they said they didn't like the font
Yes, I did use Arial. And honestly out of the fonts that are on every computer, Arial is the most modern and clean looking. Yes, I could've used a different font, I have 100's to choose from on my comp, but I decided that instead of the people in admissions only seeing blank space or screwed up characters when i put "Alba Superextra Bright" into the font-family class, i would use something that they could actually see.
I know i'm bad at taking critiscm. But why does sam think she knows more about me than design? Because she is older than me? I know she was more skilled at drawing by hand....but I think I could make a better poster on the computer any day.
Also, the thing that hurt the most
"I think you just don't really have much of an eye for this" "Yeah, you have to try it a few times for it to fall into place"
Try it a few times? They just made it sound like i've never done this before. Ever. and I have, a bunch of times. And I think I do have an eye for it.
So there.
Sorry if htat sounded immature or anything....i just needed to get that out. Rapidly typed.
See you all at the Lampshades show tomorrow night, hopefully. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| Soooo life has been pretty good so far this summer besides the stresses of Pratt. I've done and experienced various things. 2nite I saw the new Harry Potter and got into the book a little but my sister took it back when she got home. Seeing the movie/book kind of made me long for female companionship, which is fucking weird...harry potter movies/books should probably not make me feel that way. Than I start thinking that I'm becoming one of those weird people that reads fanfictions about Ginny Weasly being a lesbian with like, Hermione, or some shit like that. Thats just fucking weird. (for the record I only read one fanfiction in my whole life.) (so far)
Anyway, the reason I posted is in hopes that some of you would read my VERY FIRST DRAFT of my COLLEGE admissions essay. Fucking weird to say that I guess. But here it is...in first draft form, unedited, just wrote it today. Let me know what you think, please. Its kind of personal too...you may find some of it tacky or strange, but I really poured out one of the most important nights of my life.
( I hope I get into college )
